The solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 inspired my current work. High above the cliffs of Depoe Bay, Oregon the variant light of the sea influenced the series. The sun’s movement across the sky cast ever-changing shapes onto the canvas as I layered the paint. As days passed shapes began to emerge onto my canvases and groups of birds, boats and figures appeared. Once I saw the indication of an image I used chalk pastels to complete the shape; sometimes barely a stroke was needed. Other times the natural form became a completely different entity.
